The Queen's Veterinary School Hospital

This cat was referred for the investigation of a severe, progressive, ulcerative facial dermatosis with accompanying keratitis and serosanguinous nasal discharge. Feline herpes virus-1 (FHV-1) infection was suspected and FHV-1 DNA was detected in all tissue areas that were sampled. Skin biopsies failed to detect any FHV-1 inclusions. A useful tip to assist in the diagnosis of this condition would be to take a number of biopsies concentrating on the epithelial edge of the lesion rather than the more ulcerated areas. The cat is pictured before and after completion of a three-week course of oral famciclovir.
